The President of PLATO Thomas E. Wartenberg guest of the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children

Professor Thomas E. Wartenberg, president of PLATO (the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization) was the guest of the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children in the University of Haifa in May 2018.

Thomas E. Wartenberg is Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at Mount Holyoke College. His main areas of focus are aesthetics, the philosophy of film, and philosophy for children. Among his publications are Thinking on Screen:  Film as Philosophy, Big Ideas for Little Kids:  Teaching Philosophy Through Children’s Literature, A Sneetch is a Sneetch and Other Philosophical Discoveries: Finding Wisdom in Children’s Literature, Existentialism: A Beginner’s Guide, and mostly recently Mel Bochner: Illustrating Philosophy. His first philosophy for children website, teachingchildrenphilosophy.org, was awarded the 2011 APA/PDC Prize for Excellence and Innovations in Philosophy Programs. He received the 2013 Merritt Prize for his contributions to the philosophy of education. He is President of PLATO and Film Editor for Philosophy Now. He recently created a website for teaching philosophy through works of art: Philosophy@The Virtual Art Museum.

Professor Wartenberg conducted a workshop on the use of children’s books for philosophical inquiry with children. The lecture discussed the book Frog and Toad.

Frog and Toad are the protagonists of a series of stories by the picture book author and illustrator Arnold Lobel. The two amphibians repeatedly find themselves facing difficulties, such as how to get some seeds to grow (“The Garden”) and trying not to get sick by eating too many cookies (“Cookies”). The stories are told with such verve and humor that their philosophical underpinnings are often passed over. But philosophical they really are.

In his talk, he examined how a favorite Frog and Toad story, “Dragons and Giants,” examines an important philosophical question: Whether you can be brave even though you are scared. I will show that the story actually make a philosophical claim by presenting a counterexample to a philosophical thesis.

His examination of “Dragons and Giants” served to introduce a more general discussion of the utility of picture books as prompts for elementary school philosophy discussions. The talk ended with a brief survey of the state of philosophy for children in the United States and the central US organization that fosters its development, PLATO.

At the end of Wartenberg’s lecture, Dr. Arie Kizel and the students in the Seminar for Philosophy with Children thanked Tom for an excellent workshop that was followed by an open discussion on the possibilities for deepening the philosophical inquiry amongst children.

פרופ' תום ורטנברג, נשיא PLATO (האגודה האמריקאית לפילוסופיה עם ילדים) התארח בסוף חודש מאי 2018 בפורום האקדמי ישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים באוניברסיטת חיפה.

פרופ' ורטנברג העביר העבירה סדנא אודות השימוש בספרי ילדים לצורך חקירה פילוסופית עם ילדים. ההרצאה נגעה לספר Frog and Toad.

בתום ההרצאה הודו ד"ר אריה קיזל והסטודנטיות בסמינר פילוסופיה עם ילדים לתום ורטנברג על הסדנא המעולה אשר הסתיימה בדיון פתוח אודות אפשרויות העמקת החקירה הפילוסופית בקרב ילדים.

Professional Development Training for Teachers in Philosophy with Children at the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children

During the second semester of 2018 the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children held a professional development training for teachers on Philosophy with Children. The training sessions were conducted by Mrs. Talia Birkhahan Co-director of the Israeli Center for Philosophy in Education: Philosophy for Life and Dr. Arie Kizel Head of the Pedagogical Development of Educational Systems Program in the University of Haifa and the president of ICPIC.

The training focused on community and philosophical inquiry alongside theoretical materials. The participants also experimented in a philosophical community of inquiry discussing texts designed for children.

השתלמות פיתוח מקצועי למורים בפילוסופיה עם ילדים

במהלך סמסטר ב' של שנת הלימודים 2018 התקיימה במסגרת הפורום האקדמי הישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים השתלמות פיתוח מקצועי למורים בנושא פילוסופיה עם ילדים. 

ההשתלמות הובלה על ידי גב' טליה בירקאן, המנהלת השותפה של המרכז הישראלי לפילוסופיה לחיים יחד עם ד"ר אריה קיזל, ראש המגמה לפיתוח פדגוגי של מערכות חינוך באוניברסיטת חיפה ונשיא האגודה הבינלאומית לפילוסופיה עם ילדים.

ההשתלמות שמה דגש על נושאי הקהילה והחקירה הפילוסופית ולצד חומר תיאורטי עברו משתתפות הקורס גם התנסות בקהילת חקר פילוסופית סביב טקסטים המיועדים לילדים.

The Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children organized a panel at the Night of Philosophy in Tel Aviv

The Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children held a panel on Philosophy with Children for at the Night of Philosophy that took place in Tel Aviv on May 31^st 2018.

The Night of Philosophy is a major event held for the fourth consecutive year by the French Institute in Israel. During one night the general public comes together and participates in a plethora of lectures and panels in different fields of philosophy.

The panel entitled “Philosophy with Children and the Current Israeli Education” was conducted by Dr. Arie Kizel the head of Pedagogical Development of Educational Systems Program in the University of Haifa, Dr. Keren Sadan from Tel Aviv who holds workshops in the field of Philosophy with Children and Dr. Eli Pitkowski from Tel-Hai College.

The panel discussed several questions such as: why is education that promotes free thinking and philosophy excluded from the Israeli curriculum, as well as from the educational sphere of the Israeli Educational System. The short lectures were followed by an open discussion with the audience.

הפורום האקדמי הישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים ארגן פאנל בנושא פילוסופיה עם ילדים בליל הפילוסופיה שהתקיים בתל אביב ב-31 במאי 2018.

ליל הפילוסופיה הוא אירוע מרכזי המאורגן זו השנה הרביעית על ידי המכון הצרפתי בישראל. הוא מפגיש אל תוך הלילה את הקהל הרחב עם שלל הרצאות ופאנלים בתחומים שונים של הפילוסופיה.

בפאנל הועלו שאלות כמו מדוע החינוך לחשיבה חופשית ופילוסופיה לילדים ועם ילדים מודרת מתכנית הלימודים הישראלי ולמעשה גם ממרחב החינוך של מערכת החינוך הישראלית. בתום ההרצאות הקצרות התקיים דיון פתוח עם הקהל.

The Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children hosts Professor Daniela Camhy

Professor Daniela Camhy, head of the Austrian Center for Philosophy with Children, was a guest of the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children at the University of Haifa during March,2018. During her visit she gave several lectures to the participants of the Annual Seminar of Philosophy with Children headed by Dr. Arie Kizel, and also gave a lecture to the Forum of the Interdisciplinary Program in Early Education and Development, headed by Dr. Yair Ziv, and also to the participants of the International MA Program in Child Development headed by Prof. Avi Sagi.

In her lectures, Professor Camhy reviewed the development of Philosophy with Children around the world, with a particular emphasis to Education for Cosmopolitanism using communities of philosophical inquiry for children. Professor Camhy is one of the founders of the PEACE program shared by Spain, Austria and Israel; as part of which stories were written for children in order to explore different issues pertaining to multiculturalism and the significance of cosmopolite understanding amongst children.  

הפורום האקדמי הישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים ארח את פרופ' דניאלה קאמי

פרופ' דניאלה קאמי, ראש המרכז האוסטרי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים היתה אורחת הפורום האקדמי הישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים באוניברסיטת חיפה במהלך חודש מרץ 2018. במסגרת ביקורה בפורום, העבירה פרופ' קאמי מספר הרצאות בפני משתתפי הסמינר השנתי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים בראשות ד"ר אריה קיזל וכן הרצתה בפני הפורום של התכנית הבין תחומית לגיל הרך בראשותו של ד"ר יאיר זיו ובפני משתתפי התכנית הבינלאומית לגיל הרך בראשותו של פרופ' אבי שגיא.

בהרצאותיה סקרה פרופ' קאמי את התפתחות תחום הפילוסופיה עם ילדים ברחבי העולם ושמה דגש מיוחד על נושא החינוך לקוסמופוליטיות באמצעות שימוש בקהילת חקר פילוסופית לילדים. פרופ' קאמי היא ממפתחות תוכנית PEACE המשותפת לספרד, אוסטריה וישראל ואשר במסגרתה נכתבו סיפורים לילדים שבאמצעותם נבחנות סוגיות שונות הנוגעות לרב תרבותיות ולחשיבות ההבנה הקוסמופוליטית בקרב ילדים.

שתי סטודנטיות זכו לראשונה בפרס דן וולנר לעבודות בפילוסופיה עם ילדים

שתי סטודנטיות לתואר שני בחוג ללמידה, הוראה והדרכה זכו בפרס דן וולנר לעבודות מחקר בתחום פילוסופיה עם ילדים. זו השנה הראשונה שהפרס מחולק מטעם הפורום האקדמי הישראלי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים במגמה לפיתוח פדגוגי של מערכות חינוך.

הפרס נתרם על ידי משפחתו של דן וולנר ז"ל שנכחה באירוע. קמיליה וולנר, אלמנתו אמרה: "אהובנו דני הלך לעולמו לפני שנתיים. מתוך רצון להנציח את זכרו וליצור המשכיות לעשייה המקצועית שלו, בחרנו להעניק מלגות צנועות לסטודנטים, שיציגו עבודות טובות בתחומים המקדמים ערכים דמוקרטים של שוויון, זכויות האדם ודו קיום- ערכים, שהיוו את תפיסת עולמו של דני. תפיסה שהיה בה תמהיל די נדיר של מחויבות עמוקה לגורל העם היהודי ומדינת ישראל  ובד בבד מחויבות לעשיית צדק ורגישות גבוהה לסבלם של אחרים, בני אנוש ועמים. העשייה המקצועית של דני נחלקה לשתי תקופות- בראשונה עסק בתחום הניהול והשיווק בתעשייה. שם קצר הישגים רבים והשניה - אליה הגיע אחרי משבר בריאותי, שהוביל אותו להחלטה לעסוק באופן ישיר בפעילות ש"תהפוך את העולם למקום טוב יותר".
קמיליה וולנר הוסיפה: "דני הקים את 'מיעוטים בישראל', חברה, שפעלה בשיתוף עם האיחוד האירופי וגורמים נוספים, לטובת קיום פעילויות המקדמות דו קיום, זכויות אדם והעצמת אוכלוסיות מוחלשות. במסגרת 'מיעוטים בישראל' היה שותף ומוביל של פרויקטים רבים ומגוונים בארץ ובמדינות הים התיכון, במרביתם השתתפו בני נוער וצעירים מחלקים שונים של החברה. אנו רואים בהענקת מלגות לאנשים צעירים, שבחרו לעסוק בנושאים אלו המשכיות לפועלו של דני בדרך להגשמת החלום "להפוך את העולם למקום טוב יותר".

דיקן הפקולטה לחינוך, פרופ' חנן אלכסנדר, אמר בטקס כי הוא רואה בפרס חשיבות מיוחדת בעיקר בגלל שהוא מוענק לשתי סטודנטיות שמשלבות מחקר אקדמי מעמיק עם עשייה רב-תחומית בשטח החינוך. ראש החוג ללמידה, הוראה והדרכה, פרופ' דני בן-צבי הודה למשפחת וולנר על נכונותה להעניק את המלגות כדי להנציח את רוחו המיוחדת של דן וולנר וברך את כלות הפרס על עשייתן האקדמית והחינוכית.
ראש המגמה לפיתוח פדגוגי של מערכות חינוך, ד"ר אריה קיזל ברך את זוכות הפרס: מרלן עבדאללה שחקרה את הפדגוגיה האלטרנטיבית ותפיסות המורות בבית הספר היסודי לבנות עיסאוויה במזרח ירושלים באמצעות תכנית פילוסופיה עם ילדים. מאמרה בתחום פורסם בכתב העת Journal of Philosophy in Schools ודורית קרשנר שכתבה עבודות מחקר על מושג המשמעות בהגותו של מתיו ליפמן, אבי פילוסופיה לילדים. קרשנר הציגה את עבודת המחקר שלה בכנס האירופי לפילוסופיה עם ילדים בגרץ שבאוסטריה באוקטובר 2017 ותציג באוגוסט הקרוב בכנס הבינלאומי של INPE שייערך בפקולטה לחינוך באוניברסיטת חיפה.
כלות הפרס הציגו את עבודותיהן בפני המשפחה, חברי הסגל והסטודנטיות לתואר שני במגמה לפיתוח פדגוגי של מערכות חינוך.

The Dan Volner Award for Outstanding Research Papers in Philosophy with Children

Two graduate students in the Department of Learning, Instruction and Teacher Training at the

 University of Haifa, have won the Dan Volner Award for Outstanding Research Papers in the field of Philosophy with Children.  On May 2018 the award was granted for the first time on behalf of the Israeli Academic Forum for Philosophy with Children aiming at the pedagogical development of educational systems.

The award was donated by the family of Dan Volner, who attended the event. His widow, Camila Volner said: “Our beloved Dani passed away two years ago. Wanting to commemorate him and create a continuity to his professional work, we chose to award humble scholarships to students who will present outstanding papers in the fields that promote democratic values of equality, human rights and coexistence – values that constituted Danny’s world view. A world view that is quite a rare amalgamation of a deep commitment to the faith of the Jewish people and the State of Israel alongside a commitment to justice and high sensibility to the suffering of other humans and peoples. Danny’s professional work was can be divided into two periods – first he dealt with managerial and marketing aspects in the industry, where he was highly accomplished; the second – he reached following a health crisis that led him to make a decision he was going to work directly in activities that “will make the world a better place.”

Camila Volner added: “Danny founded ‘Minorities in Israel’, a company that acted alongside the EU and other factors to hold activities that promote coexistence, human rights and the empowering of disadvantaged populations. As part of “Minorities in Israel” he was both a partner and leader of many and diverse projects in Israel and the Mediterranean countries. Teenagers and youths from various parts of society participated in most of them. For us, the awarding of scholarships to young people who chose to deal with these subjects creates a continuity to Danny’s work to fulfilling his dream of “making the world a better place”.

The Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Hanan Alexander, said at the ceremony that he sees the reward as particularly significant because it is awarded to two students who combine in depth academic research with multidisciplinary work in the field of education. The head of the Department of Learning, Instruction and Teacher Training, Professor Dani Ben-Zvi, thanked the Volner family for its willingness to award the scholarships in order to commemorate Dan Volner’s unique spirit, and congratulated the recipients of the award for their academic and educational work.

The Head of the Pedagogical Development of Educational Systems Program, Dr. Arie Kizel, congratulated the recipients of the award: Marlen Abdullah who investigated the alternative pedagogy and teacher perception in the Girls Elementary School in Isawiya, East Jerusalem using the Philosophy with Children Program. Her article in the field has been published at the Journal of Philosophy in Schools, and Dorit Kirshner, who write her research paper about the notion of meaning in Mathew Lipman’s philosophy, the founder of Philosophy with Children. Kirshner Presented her research in the European Convention for Philosophy with Children in Gertz, Austria in October 2017, and will present it this August in the INPE International conference that will be held in the University of Haifa in August 2018.

The recipients presented their works in front of family members, staff and fellow graduate students in the program of Pedagogical Development of Educational Systems.
